Happiness 101: Lose These 3 Things to Up Your Happiness Quotient

I think we can all agree there are far too many people walking around in a funk these days. It wouldn't be so bad if their moods were self-contained, but more often than not their negativity impacts family, friends, co-workers, cashiers, waitstaff, and everyone else they come into contact. Feeling trapped in a cycle of negativity and moodiness?  Luckily for you, there are three things you can do right now to improve your mindset and up your happiness quotient.

#1 Ditch the Anger

The three common causes of anger are fear, pain, and frustration. Whether you're having full-blown eruptions or a low and slow simmer is more your M.O., it's time to get to the bottom of what's fueling your anger. Until you trace the cause back to its origin and deal with that the flow of happiness, gratitude, peace, and love meant to radiate from your heart consistently will remain obstructed. Acknowledge the presence of anger in your life. That's the beginning step toward unraveling its grip. From there you can move on to ask yourself where it comes from and why am I angry?

#2 Judgment

Notice how judgy we've all become? We have 20/20 vision when it comes to the lives of others, but lack the same clarity to recognize and fix our issues. There are four conduits to judgment. The first two are a belief in your superiority and a lack of empathy for others. If you can relate, you've likely spent too much time in the bubble (where the focus is almost entirely on yourself). It's time to reconnect with others in more meaningful ways. Instead of observing others and their actions sow seeds of goodwill; volunteer, give back in some way with no expectations of seeing your kindness come back to you. Judging can also stem from envy and jealousy; identifying something in others that is lacking in your experience. Ask yourself what it is that you see/feel/desire/want, then go after it. You're the author of this story, and you can change it at any point in time.

It’s not about the destination, but the journey that gets you there.

#3 Desire to Control Everything

Life is full of surprises, and relatively few guarantees. You/me/we aren't always going to know or have control over the outcome. We tend to focus on the arrival when in reality life is the journey. Don't be so quick to skim over the experiences along the way to your particular destination. After all, that is where you hone your skills, pick up insights, wisdom, and knowledge that you'll apply when you "get there," wherever that might be. So get used to living with some uncertainty, and embrace the opportunity to live life to the fullest. The sooner you do, the better off you'll be!

Spend a few moments each day affirming your commitment to improve in these three things. In no time, you'll recognize old patterns that restrict your happiness from flowing freely and head them off before they take up residence in your daily life!
